Massive Pokémon Leak: Game Freak Admits Hack Affected Personal Data
Game Freak, the primary developer of Pokémon games, has experienced a significant data breach.
The breach resulted in the leak of personal information of employees and a large collection of Pokémon-related documents, including source code for old games. In an official statement, Game Freak attributed the breach to “unauthorized access to our servers by a third party” and apologized for exposing more than 2,600 pieces of personal data. The breach occurred in August 2024, after which the affected server was restored.
The leaked files began circulating online over the weekend, and Game Freak's statement, dated October 10, 2024, appeared online shortly after. While the statement focuses on the breach of employee data, it does not address the leak of sensitive game information. However, online communities have claimed to uncover various Pokémon-related materials, such as unreleased creature designs, game prototypes, and full builds of past games. There is limited information on upcoming projects, with only codenames and a few basic details being revealed.
Game Freak expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and is contacting affected individuals directly. The company has already taken steps to rebuild the compromised server and improve security measures to prevent future breaches.
